Minibeast Masquerade

This story is designed for KS1 pupils and involves simple investigations and characterisations around mini beasts, a staple in the current curriculum. Follow the adventure, solve the riddles and meet the characters, then retreat into the classroom to write and draw your own. Paste these over the current story and then walk again to see your pupils writing and drawing inside the Minibeast trail.

This walk covers the following curriculum elements: general and group reading, science insects, teamwork, negotiation, understanding directions and locations.

Place chapter one where you would like it to reveal, ie at the entrance or gate to your school field. Then place the next chapters sequentially around the edge up to chapter 7. Then drop the next one on top of number 6, the next on 5, then 4 then 3 then 2 then 1, in this way you will lead the trail out, and then back again just as it happens in the story line.

Chapter one

Welcome

Welcome one and welcome all
To the mini-beast masquerade ball.
I'm the masquerade master, the king pin creature,
Your guide for the evening and dancing teacher.
Once a year for one whole day
We get together to dance and play

Our faces are covered, a mask we must wear
But clues to our identity can be seen everywhere.
We dance together in twos and threes
After a whole days dancing, we fall to our knees.
Come and join us, if you dare.
You need cool moves and dancing flair.

Can you find who is hiding behind the mask?
Keep your guesses to yourself and at the end I will ask.
Follow my directions and move through our land,
Be careful where you tread, as way above us you stand!

Chapter two

The Hop Spotter

Hello, behind my mask there are many things to see
To help you reveal the identity of me,
Are you ready?

I'm oval not round,
I am fire engine red,
I have a half-moon shaped face,
and black spots up to my head.
Who am I?

My dance is the hop spot, dancing from one foot to another.
Care to join me, dancing to my next friend?

The Flutter Flapper

Hello, behind my mask there are many things to see
To help you reveal the identity of me,
Are you ready?

I have symmetrical patterns
On my 4 beautiful wings
Two feelers so delicate,
The most beautiful of things.
Who am I?

My dance is the flutter flap, lifting off the ground, flapping my wings.

Chapter four

The Buzz Spinner

Hello, behind my mask there are many things to see
To help you reveal the identity of me,
Are you ready?

I have black and yellow stripes
and I hum and buzz across the sky.
I live in a hive defending my Queen
making sticky sweet goodness for you to try.
Who am I?

My dance is the waggle dance.
Spin round in circles buzzing loudly.
Care to join me, dancing to my next friend?

Chapter five

The Muscle Mover

Hello, behind my mask there are many things to see
To help you reveal the identity of me,
Are you ready?

I work in a team
and I'm super strong for my size.
My body is black
and a picnic sandwich is my prize!
Who am I?

My dance is the muscle move.
Squat up and down showing you muscles!

The Furry Wiggler

Hello, behind my mask there are many things to see
To help you reveal the identity of me,
Are you ready?

I like to chomp on crunchy leaves,
munching and fattening before your eyes.
I'm green, furry and wriggly,
at the end of my life I get a surprise!
Who am I?

My dance is the wriggle roll
roll your body forwards and back

The Reveal

You met my friends, but there are many more,
Masked and dancing around the floor.
